Registering to vote is the first crucial step. If you have not yet registered to vote, visit https://www.vote.org/ to learn how to register in your state and for other information about voting in your state.
If you have registered to vote, it is important to know what is on the ballot and how it affects you. The most powerful position you will be voting on will be the office of the President of the United States, but there will be other offices and ballot measures from your state and local jurisdiction that you will be voting on. Knowing about the measures beforehand is essential to exercising your right to vote so you make the most informed decision based on your interests.
As for offices you will be voting on, it is important to know how each candidate for office stand on important issues and what policy proposals they offer to the nation.
Democrat candidate
Vice President Kamala Harris is the first woman Vice President ever elected, the first black and Indian Vice President, and the current Vice President to President Joe Biden who was elected in 2020 as a pandemic ravaged the nation. President Biden initially ran for re-election, however dropped out of the race as concerns over his age became prevalent. With Biden's and other top Democrats endorsement, Vice President Harris won the Democratic nomination in August 2024.
Harris' career began in 2004 as the District Attorney of San Francisco where she fought against drug traffickers, human traffickers, and sexual abusers. In 2011, she was later elected as the Attorney General of California where she continued to fight for the people, even advocating against California Proposition 8 (2008) which led to the legalization of same-sex marriage in the state. Harris would later serve California in the U.S. Senate from 2017 all the way until 2020 when she was elected as the Vice President of the United States.

Republican candidate
Fmr. President Donald Trump was the 45th President of the United States who served from 2017-2021. Trump's time in office was mostly filled with controversies around his immigration proposals surrounding people entering the southern border and attempting to ban entry of people from "Muslim" countries. Trump has also been impeached twice during his presidency; the first time for attempting a quid-pro-quo on the President of Ukraine for harmful information on then-fmr. Vice President Joe Biden, then the second time for inciting a insurrection against the United States Capitol.
Trump's public career exploded in the 1980s and 1990s as he was a famous businessman and real estate developer. Despite his multiple bankruptcies, he was able to rebuild his real estate empire and became a television personality, most notably his show The Apprentice. After leaving the White House, Trump has repeatedly claimed that the 2020 election was stolen, and was found to have stolen classified documents. Trump would later be indicted in four criminal cases, which only one has went to trial and returned with a guilty verdict of 34 charges. Trump has repeatedly threatened to go after those who prosecuted him.

In normal times, third party candidates were important to many voters as they gave them another voice that wasn't Democrat nor Republican. As important as they are, this is a unusual election with too much at stake, so we will be blunt here and say that they are a slight problem in this election. In terms of the presidential election, third party candidates can easily siphon votes away from the two candidates and easily cause the least favorable to win. With a election this consequential, it is best to vote for the main candidates at least just this time, so that way once the political climate has cooled, your voice can be more accurately represented. Simply put, if one of these candidates win (particularly the criminal), there won't be another election.
WITH THAT SAID...we still believe that you should vote on who you believe will represent your interests and who will work for you, not themselves.
